Measuring your blood pressure at home: how to do it right
The keys to a reliable reading that is useful for your doctor.
- 1
Before measuring
Avoid coffee, smoking and exercise for 30 minutes beforehand, and rest seated for about 5 minutes.
- 2
Your posture
Sit with your back supported and your feet flat on the floor. Rest your arm on a table, with the cuff at heart level.
- 3
Two readings
Take two readings one or two minutes apart and write down both.
- 4
Same time every day
Measuring at similar times each day makes the trend easier to see.
- 5
Log and share
Record each reading in MIVOR; if you share it with your doctor, they will see the trend between visits.
- 6
When to get help
Follow the target values your doctor has given you. If your blood pressure is very high and you have chest pain, shortness of breath or weakness, call emergency services.
